What are Alaska's State CE Requirements?

The Alaska Board of Nursing provides the following guidelines regarding the continuing education requirements for nursing professions in Alaska.

 

Licensed Practical Nurses

  • LPNs must complete 2 out of the 3 methods below every 2 years.

    • 320 hours of nursing employment

    • 30 hours of continuing education or a current national nursing certification

    • 30 hours of professional nursing activities

    An LPN is exempt from the above if they have completed:

    • Alternative Methods (nursing refresher course, degree or certificate in nursing or NCLEX)

     

    Registered Nurses

    • RNs must complete 2 out of the 3 methods below every 2 years.

      • 320 hours of nursing employment

      • 30 hours of continuing education or a current national nursing certification

      • 30 hours of professional nursing activities

      An RN is exempt from the above if they have completed:

      • Alternative Methods (nursing refresher course, degree or certificate in nursing, or NCLEX)

       

      Advanced Practice Registered Nurses

      • Existing APRNs must hold an active RN License in good standing and comply with the following:

        • 15 contact hours on advanced pharmacology and clinical management of drug therapy (For initial application, prescriptive authority, or if they were to add prescriptive authority and did not have it with their initial licensure)

        • Current National Certification

        • 2 Contact Hours in Pain Management and Opioid use and addiction (if current DEA registration and controlled substance authority)

        • APRN applying for initial licensure

          • APRN (without prescriptive authority)- 60 hours

          • APRN (with prescriptive authority)- 60 hours + 15 hours of pharmacology

          • APRN (with prescriptive authority+ controlled and hold DEA)- 60 hours + 15 hours pharmacology + 2 hours opioid/pain management/addiction

        If you are seeking initial licensure as an APRN in the state of Alaska, you will need to complete 60 hours of continuing education within the previous two years of the date of your application. For new APRNs seeking initial licensure with Prescriptive Authority: Pursuant to 12 AAC 44.440, you must submit copies of certificates of completion of 15 contact hours of education in advanced pharmacology and clinical management of drug therapy obtained within the past two years. Finally, if you have a DEA registration, you are required to submit proof of 2 contact hours in pain management and opioid use and addiction, completed within the two years preceding the date of the application, in accordance with 12 AAC 44.445.
