What are Delaware's State CE Requirements?

The Delaware Board of Nursing provides the following guidelines regarding the continuing education requirements for nursing professions in Delaware.

Licensed Practical Nurses

LPNs are required to complete 24 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years. Nursing CE Central provides a comprehensive course bundle to meet these requirements, available here.

  • 3 of the 24 contact hours must be on substance abuse; this course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
  • 1 of the 30 contact hours must be on the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia if working in adult or gerontology healthcare.

Registered Nurses

RNs are required to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years. Nursing CE Central provides a comprehensive course bundle to meet these requirements, available here.

  • 3 of the 30 contact hours must be on substance abuse. This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
  • 1 of the 30 contact hours must be on the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia if working in adult or gerontology healthcare.

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses

  • APRNs are required to maintain their national certification and to meet qualifications to renew their RN license.
  • APRNS working in Adult or Gerontology in a healthcare setting must complete at least one (1) hour in each reporting period on the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias.
  • APRNs with prescriptive authority are required 2 hours in controlled substances prescribing practices, treatment of chronic pain, or related topics per the Uniform Controlled Substances Act
    • APRNs with prescriptive authority fulfill their CSR requirement by completing the 3-hour substance abuse requirement for their RN license.
  • APRNs Returning to Practice:
  • APRNs who have been out of active clinical practice for more than 2 years but less than 5 years
      • 24 hours of CE with 12 hours in pharmacotherapeutics and
    • 12 hours in the clinical management of patients taken within 1 year before application.
  • APRNs who have been out of active clinical practice for more than 5 years
    • 45 hours of pharmacotherapeutics CE taken within 1 year before application, and the advanced practice refresher program.
