The Florida Board of Nursing provides the following guidelines regarding the continuing education requirements for nursing professions in Florida.
Licensed Practical Nurses

LPNs can complete 24 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years OR achieve, renew, or maintain national certification in their specialty area. There are, however, mandatory requirements they must complete:

2 contact hours must be on the prevention of medical errors

2 contact hours must be on Florida laws & regulations

2 contact hours must be on recognizing impairment in the workplace – required every 4 years (2 renewals)

2 contact hours must be on human trafficking

2 contact hours must be on domestic violence every 6 years (3 renewals)

1 contact hour must be on HIV/AIDS before first renewal (one-time requirement)
Registered Nurses

3 contact hours must be on safe and effective prescription of Controlled Substances

2 contact hours must be on domestic violence every 6 years (3 renewals)

1 contact hour must be on HIV/AIDS before first renewal (one-time requirement)

Autonomous Nurse Practitioners must complete 10 additional contact hours at the graduate or NP level

Autonomous APRNs Initial Registration Requirements:

Completion of 45 hours of CE in pharmacology and 45 hours of CE in differential diagnosis, within the past 5 years of registration.

For APRNs who wish to register for autonomous practice, the requirement to provide patient care within the framework of an established protocol with a supervising physician or dentist is removed.
