What are Florida's State CE Requirements?

The Florida Board of Nursing provides the following guidelines regarding the continuing education requirements for nursing professions in Florida.

Licensed Practical Nurses

  • LPNs can choose to complete 24 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years OR achieve, renew or maintain national certification in their area of specialty. There are however mandatory requirements they must complete:
    • 2 contact hours must be on the prevention of medical errors. This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
    • 2 contact hours must be on Florida laws & regulations. This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
    • 2 contact hours must be on recognizing impairment in the workplace – required every 4 years (2 renewals). This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
    • 2 contact hours must be on human trafficking. This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
  • 2 contact hours must be on domestic violence every 6 years (3 renewals). This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
  • 1 contact hour must be on HIV/AIDS prior to first renewal (one-time requirement). This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.

Registered Nurses

  • RNs can choose to complete 24 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years OR achieve, renew or maintain national certification in their area of specialty. There are however mandatory requirements they must complete:

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses

  • APRNs can choose to complete the contact hour requirement for registered nurses OR achieve, renew, or maintain national certification in their area of specialty. There are, however, mandatory requirements they must complete:
    • 2 contact hours must be on the prevention of medical errors. This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
    • 2 contact hours must be on Florida laws & regulations. This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
    • 2 contact hours must be on recognizing impairment in the workplace – required every 4 years (2 renewals). This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.

    • 3 contact hours must be on safe and effective prescription of Controlled Substances. This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
  • 2 contact hours must be on domestic violence every 6 years (3 renewals). This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
  • 1 contact hour must be on HIV/AIDS prior to first renewal (one-time requirement). This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
  • Autonomous Nurse Practitioners must complete 10 additional contact hours at the graduate or NP level. Nursing CE Central's Florida Autonomous NP Bundle meets this requirement.
  • Autonomous APRNs Initial Registration Requirements:
  • Florida Nurse Midwives Renewal Requirements
    • Florida Nurse Midwives are required to complete 20 hours every two years. This course bundle is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be found here.
      • 16 general nursing hours related to the practice of midwifery.
      • 2 contact hours must be on the prevention of medical errors. This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here
      • 1 Contact hours must be on the laws and rules in Florida
      • 1 Hour on HIV/AIDS
