What are Maine's State CE Requirements?

The Maine Board of Nursing provides the following guidelines regarding the continuing education requirements for nursing professions in Maine.

 

Licensed Practical Nurses

  • The Maine Board of Nursing does not require continuing education for LPNs at this time.

Registered Nurses

  • The Maine Board of Nursing does not require continuing education for RNs at this time.

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses

  • APRNs are required to complete 50 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.
    • At least 3 of the 50 contact hours must be on The Prescribing of Opioid Medication for those with prescriptive authority
    • 30 Hours must be Category 1
    • No more than 20 Hours can be Category II
  • Maintain RN License
  • APRNs are also required to maintain their national nursing certification
    • APRNs that were approved to practice prior to 1993 are not required to have a national certification.
  • APRNs who hold prescriptive authority in another U.S. jurisdiction seeking prescriptive authority in Maine must complete 45 contact hours in pharmacology and complete a minimum of 200 hours of practice in an expanded specialty role within the preceding two years.
    • APRNs who have not prescribed medications within the past two years must provide evidence of completing 15 contact hours of pharmacology within the two years prior to applying for approval to practice.
    • APRNs who have not prescribed medications in the last 5 years must complete 45 contact hours in pharmacology
