What are Michigan's State CE Requirements?

The Michigan Board of Nursing provides the following guidelines regarding the continuing education requirements for nursing professions in Michigan.

 

Licensed Practical Nurses

  • LPNs are required to complete 25 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.

    • 2 of the 25 contact hours must be on pain and symptom management

    • 1 of the 25 contact hours must be on human trafficking (one-time requirement)

    • 1 contact hour of implicit bias training for each year of their license or registration cycle; for every two-year renewal, nurses will need 2 contact hours of implicit bias training.

  • No more than 12 credit hours may be earned during a 24-hour period.

 

Registered Nurses

  • RNs are required to complete 25 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.

    • 2 of the 25 contact hours must be on pain and symptom management

    • 1 of the 25 contact hours must be on human trafficking (one-time requirement)

    • 1 contact hour of implicit bias training for each year of their license or registration cycle; for every two-year renewal, nurses will need 2 contact hours of implicit bias training.

  • No more than 12 credit hours may be earned during a 24-hour period.

 

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses

  • APRNs are required to complete 25 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.

    • CRNAs with a controlled substance license must complete an opioids and controlled substance awareness course (one-time requirement)

    • 2 of the 25 contact hours must be on pain and symptom management

    • 1 of the 25 contact hours must be on human trafficking (one-time requirement)

    • 1 additional contact hour of implicit bias training for each year of their license or registration cycle; for every two-year renewal, nurses will need 2 contact hours of implicit bias training.

  • No more than 12 credit hours may be earned during 24 hours.

  • **New May 28, 2024 ** APRNs who are licensed prescribers or dispensers of controlled substances must complete training in opioids and controlled substance awareness every renewal period.
