What are California's State CE Requirements?
The California Board of Registered Nursing provides the following guidelines regarding the continuing education requirements for nursing professions in California.
Licensed Vocational Nurses
- LVNs are required to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.
Registered Nurses
- RNs are required to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.

- 1 hour of implicit bias training, one-time only, within the first two years of licensure. This is the only continuing education required for the first license renewal after taking the national licensing exam.
- Newly Licensed RNs are exempt from the 30 contact hour requirement, with the exception of the 1 contact hour implicit bias training that is to be completed within their first two years of licensure, per Bill AB1407 Chapter 445
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses
- APRNs are required to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.
- APRNs who provide primary care to a patient population 25% or more of which is 65+ years of age shall certify that they have completed at least 20% of all mandatory CE hours in the field of gerontology, the special care needs of patients with dementia, or the care of older patients every two years.
- APRNs with prescriptive authority are required to complete 3 contact hours on Schedule II controlled substances, and the risks of addiction
- Certified Nurse Midwives are required to complete 2 contact hours on Schedule II controlled substances and neonatal abstinence syndrome
- Newly licensed APRNs are exempt from the 30 contact hour requirement, with the exception of the 1 contact hour implicit bias training that is to be completed within their first two years of licensure per Bill AB1407 Chapter 445
