What are Minnesota's State CE Requirements?

The Minnesota Board of Nursing provides the following guidelines regarding the continuing education requirements for nursing professions in Minnesota.

Licensed /Practical Nurses

  • LPNs are required to complete 12 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years. 

Registered Nurses

  • RNs are required to complete 24 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years. 

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses

  • APRNs with prescriptive authority must complete 2 contact hours of: 

    • best practices in prescribing opioids and controlled substances; and 

    • non-pharmacological and implantable device alternatives for the treatment of pain and ongoing pain. 

    • APRNs who are certified by a national professional nursing or medical organization meets the requirements for RN renewal by holding an approved and current certification.
