What are New York's State CE Requirements?
The New York State Board of Nursing provides the following guidelines regarding the continuing education requirements for nursing professions in New York.
Licensed Practical Nurses
- LPNs are required to complete the New York State Mandated Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect.
- All healthcare professionals in New York are required to complete a new 2-hour mandatory training on the identification and reporting of child abuse and maltreatment. As of 2025, the curriculum has been updated due to amendments to Social Services Law 413, and all nurses must complete this NEW training course by November 17, 2026.
- This course is offered by Nursing CE Central and has been approved by New York, and meets the current requirements for renewal, and can be taken here.
- LPNs are required to complete coursework in infection control and barrier precautions every 4 years.
- There are no set hours for this requirement, as long as the course has at least 7 core elements and is approved by NYSED. This course is approved and offered through Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
Registered Nurses
- RNs are required to complete coursework in infection control and barrier precautions every 4 years.

- APRNs are required to complete the New York State Mandated Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect.
- All healthcare professionals in New York are required to complete a new 2-hour mandatory training on the identification and reporting of child abuse and maltreatment. As of 2025, the curriculum has been updated due to amendments to Social Services Law 413, and all nurses must complete this NEW training course by November 17, 2026.
- This course is offered by Nursing CE Central, has been approved by New York, meets the current renewal requirements, and can be taken here.
- APRNs with DEA registration must complete at least 3 contact hours of continuing education every 3 years this course is offered by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
- These 3 contact hours must cover all of the following topics:
- New York State and federal requirements for prescribing controlled substances
- Pain management
- Appropriate prescribing
- Managing acute pain
- Palliative medicine
- Prevention, screening, and signs of addiction
- Responses to abuse and addiction
- End-of-life care
- APRNs without DEA registration have no specified continuing education requirements at this time.
