What are Oregon's State CE Requirements?

The Oregon State Board of Nursing provides the following guidelines regarding the continuing education requirements for nursing professions in Oregon.

 

Licensed Practical Nurses

  • Must have worked 400 hours over the last two years: and

  • LPNs are also required to complete a two-hour cultural competency module each renewal cycle.

  • LPNs are required to complete one hour of pain management continuing education every renewal period.

    • The Oregon Pain Management Commission (OPMC) offers a pain module that meets this requirement. It can be found here.

  • LPNs who have worked at least 600 hours over the last 3 years

    • Complete 20 hours of continuing education

  • LPNs who have worked at least 800 hours in the last 4 years

    • Complete 30 hours of continuing education

 

Registered Nurses

  • Must have worked 400 hours over the last two years: and

  • RNs must also complete a two-hour cultural competency module each renewal cycle.

  • RNs must complete one hour of pain management continuing education every renewal period.

    • The Oregon Pain Management Commission (OPMC) offers a pain module that meets this requirement. It can be found here.

  • RNs who have worked at least 600 hours over the last 3 years

    • Complete 20 hours of continuing education

  • RNs who have worked at least 800 hours in the last 4 years

    • Complete 30 hours of continuing education

 

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses

  • APRNs in Oregon must renew their RN license to renew their APRN license; AND

  • Maintain National Certification; OR

  • 45 structured contact hours of continuing education completed in the two years before renewal of their license.

    • 15 completed CE hours must be in pharmacotherapeutic content at the NP level, congruent with their specialty role.

    • APRN-NPs licensed before January 1, 2011, are required to complete 45 contact hours of CE in population foci instead of national certification.

  • APRNs must complete one hour of pain management continuing education every renewal period.

    • APRNs are also required to complete a two-hour cultural competency module each renewal cycle

  • APRNs who hold a fluoroscopy supervision permit

    • Must complete 4 hours of CE per year or 8 hours for a 2-year renewal related to fluoroscopy and radiation.

      • Two of the yearly required 4 hours must be related to radiation use and safety, and two hours must be related to the clinical use of fluoroscopy.

  • APRN-CNSs Returning to Practice

    • For CNSs without a national certification, 100 hours of structured continuing education must be completed before being awarded the APRN license.

      • Continuing Education (CE) hours must include an advanced pharmacology course meeting the criteria in OAR 851-053-0005(3).

    • Remaining hours of continuing education shall consist of physical assessment, treatment modalities, patient management, and laboratory/diagnostic studies with content related to the licensure sought.
