What are Pennsylvania's State CE Requirements?

The Pennsylvania Board of Nursing provides the following guidelines regarding the continuing education requirements for nursing professions in Pennsylvania.

Licensed Practical Nurses

  • LPNs are required to complete 2 hours of child abuse recognition and reporting continuing education every 2 years.
    • This course is approved and provided through Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.

Registered Nurses

  • RNs are required to complete 30 contact hours of Continuing Education every 2 years.
    • This course has been approved and can be taken here.
    • 2 of the 30 contact hours must be on child abuse recognition and reporting
    • Beginning May 1, 2026, Pennsylvania nurses must complete a mandatory two-hour course on organ and tissue donation and recovery as a condition of license renewal, per PA Act 90. This training, which covers clinical aspects, must be finished within five years of initial licensure or renewal. Nursing CE Central has been approved by the Pennsylvania Board of Nursing to provide the Pennsylvania 2 CE Organ and Tissue Donation and Recovery Process course. That course can be found here

Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners

  • CRNPs and CNSs must complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.

    • 2 of the 30 hours must be on child abuse recognition and reporting.
    • 2 of the 30 hours must be on pain management and identification of addiction
    • 2 of the 30 hours must be in the practice of prescribing or dispensing opioids.
    • 16 of the 30 contact hours must be on pharmacology for those with prescriptive authority
    • This comprehensive course bundle provides the required contact hours and can be taken here.
    • Beginning May 1, 2026, Pennsylvania nurses must complete a mandatory two-hour course on organ and tissue donation and recovery as a condition of license renewal, per PA Act 90.
