The South Carolina Board of Nursing provides the following guidelines regarding the continuing education requirements for nursing professions in South Carolina.
Licensed Practical Nurses

LPNs have the option to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years to comply with their continued competency requirements. This is one of 4 options; you can view a complete list here.

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses

APRNs are required to maintain their national board certification.

APRNs applying for initial prescriptive authority must complete 45 contact hours; 15 of which must be in prescribing controlled substances.

APRNs applying for initial prescriptive authority AND have prescriptive

Authority in another state is required to complete 20 contact hours; 15 of which must be in prescribing controlled substances.

APRNs with prescriptive authority are required to complete 20 contact hours of continuing education on pharmacotherapeutics.
