What are Utah's State CE Requirements?
The Utah Board of Nursing provides the following guidelines regarding the continuing education requirements for nursing professions in Utah.
Licensed Practical Nurses
- LPNs must complete 1 out of the 3 following methods every 2 years:
- 30 contact hours of continuing education
- 15 contact hours of continuing education and 200 hours of licensed practice
- 400 hours of licensed practice
- LVNs must also complete at least one of the following online suicide prevention trainings listed here.
Registered Nurses
- RNs must complete 1 out of the 3 following methods every 2 years:
- 30 contact hours of continuing education
- 15 contact hours of continuing education and 200 hours of licensed practice
- 400 hours of licensed practice
- RNs must also complete at least one of the following online suicide prevention trainings listed here.
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses
- APRNs must complete 1 out of the 2 following methods every 2 years:
- Be currently certified or re-certified in the licensee’s specialty area of practice
- 30 contact hours of continuing education and 400 hours of practice
- If you have a license to prescribe controlled substances, at least 4 hours of continuing education must be about controlled substance prescribing.
- APRNs must also complete at least one of the following online suicide prevention trainings listed here.
- Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) with a Controlled Substance License are required to complete a minimum of 4 hours of approved continuing education in controlled substance prescribing for each license renewal period. This includes 3.5 hours of approved controlled-substance education and an additional 0.5 hours from the Department of Professional Licensing (DOPL) online controlled-substance tutorial. Nursing CE Central is an approved provider of the Utah Controlled Substances Prescribing Provider Course by the Utah Department of Commerce and Licensure. This course meets the requirements for APRN prescribers renewing their licenses and is available here.
