The Virginia Board of Nursing provides the following guidelines regarding the continuing education requirements for nursing professions in Virginia.
Licensed Practical Nurses

LPNs are required to complete 1 of 9 learning options every 2 years.

1 option is 15 contact hours of continuing education AND 640 hours of active practice as a nurse

Registered Nurses

RNs are required to complete 1 of 9 learning options every 2 years.

1 option is 15 contact hours of continuing education AND 640 hours of active practice as a nurse

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses

APRNs are required to complete 1 of 2 learning options every 2 years.

1 option is 40 contact hours of continuing education in area of specialty practice

APRNs with prescriptive authority shall obtain 8 hours of continuing education in pharmacology or pharmacotherapies each biennium in addition to the minimum nursing requirements.
