What are Washington's State CE Requirements?

The Washington State Board of Nursing provides the following guidelines regarding the continuing education requirements for nursing professions in Washington.

Licensed Practical Nurses

  • LPNs are required to complete 8 contact hours of continuing education and 96 hours of active practice annually.
  • 2 of the 8 contact hours must be on health equity.
    • This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
  • 6 additional contact hours must be on Suicide Prevention Training (one-time requirement at initial licensure)
    • This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
  • LPNs that provide telehealth services must complete telehealth training (one-time requirement)
    • This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.

Registered Nurses

  • RNs are required to complete 8 contact hours of continuing education and 96 hours of active practice annually.
  • 2 of the 8 contact hours must be on health equity.
    • This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
  • 6 additional contact hours must be on suicide prevention training (one-time requirement at initial licensure)

  • RNs that provide telehealth services must complete telehealth training (one-time requirement).

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses

  • APRNs must maintain an active RN license
  • APRNs are required to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.
  • 6 additional contact hours must be on suicide prevention training (one-time requirement)
    • This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
  • APRNs that provide telehealth services must complete telehealth training (one-time requirement).
    • This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
  • 2 of the 30 contact hours must be on health equity
    • This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
  • APRNs with prescriptive authority
    • Must complete an additional 15 contact hours of continuing education on pharmacology every 2 years.
    • APRNs who prescribe opioids must take 4 hours regarding best practices in the prescribing of opioids, and these hours can count toward the 15 pharmacology contact hours. (one-time requirement )
  • Authorizing practitioners under the Medical Cannabis Program
    • Must complete 3 hours of continuing education related to medical cannabis.
    • This course is provided by Nursing CE Central and can be taken here.
  • APRNs who are pain management specialists
    • Hold a pain management credential from a WA NCQAC-approved entity; OR
    • Complete 18 contact hours in pain management every 2 years.
    • These hours count towards the 30 total.
