The Puerto Rico Department of Health provides the following guidelines regarding the continuing education requirements for nursing professions in Puerto Rico.

Licensed Practical Nurses

LPNS are required to complete 21 contact hours of continuing education every 3 years

2 of the 21 contact hours must be on Bioethics
-
1 of the 21 Continuing Education Hours required on the Clinical Diagnosis and Management of Patients with Suspected Dengue - Administrative Order 2024-589-B. This course can be taken free of charge here.

Registered Nurses
-
RNs are required to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every 3 years
-
2 of the 30 contact hours must be on Bioethics
-
1 of the 30 Continuing Education Hours required on the Clinical Diagnosis and Management of Patients with Suspected Dengue - Administrative Order 2024-589-B. This course can be taken free of charge here.

Only 8 hours can be taken per day.

Professionals outside Puerto Rico must have 50% of the credits submitted from Puerto Rican providers.

Specialty RNs must complete 6 hours in their area of specialty.

Advanced Practice Nurses
-
APRNS are required to complete 50 contact hours of continuing education every 3 years
-
2 of the 50 contact hours must be on Bioethics
-
20 contact hours must be related to their specialty
-
1 of the 50 Continuing Education Hours required on the Clinical Diagnosis and Management of Patients with Suspected Dengue - Administrative Order 2024-589-B. This course can be taken free of charge here.

Only 8 hours can be taken per day.

Additional Requirements

$50 renewal fee (RN, LPN, APRN)

Negative certification from ASUME department (no child support payments outstanding)

Negative certification from their County Police Department (criminal background check)

Medical Liability Insurance (APRN only)

Maintain APRN Certification with ANCC (APRN only)
Accreditation
ANCC is an accepted provider by the Puerto Rico Department of Health, which oversees nursing licensure on the island.
